1 . The Challenge: Unveiling Key Sales Drivers

Our (fictitious) e-commerce business was experiencing healthy growth, but we lacked a clear understanding of the underlying factors driving our sales performance. We needed to answer critical questions to optimize our strategies:

  • Which product categories were our top performers and where were there growth opportunities?
  • How did our sales fluctuate throughout the day and across different months, revealing potential seasonal trends or peak periods?
  • Which geographic locations (cities) were our strongest markets and where should we focus our expansion efforts?
  • How could promotional events (like Diwali or Valentine's Day) impact our sales, and how could we leverage these insights for future campaigns?


2. My Solution: Building an Interactive Sales Dashboard

Here is a concise version of how I achieved the said goals:

  • Data Acquisition & Preparation: Imported and cleaned raw sales data, ensuring accuracy for analysis.
  • Key Metric Calculation: Computed essential metrics: total revenue, average order value, delivery time, revenue per category.
  • Interactive Dashboard: Developed an Excel dashboard with pivot tables and charts, enabling dynamic data exploration by month, time, category, and city.
  • Visual Storytelling: Created clear visualizations:
    • Monthly sales trend chart (revealing growth and seasonality).
    • Category contribution treemap (highlighting top performers).
    • Hourly sales distribution chart (identifying peak periods).
    • Promotional event impact analysis (quantifying effectiveness).
  • Outcome: A comprehensive dashboard for data-driven sales analysis and strategic decision-making.


3. Key Insights & Business Impact:

The dashboard provided valuable insights that led to actionable recommendations:

  • Overall Performance: We achieved a total revenue of ₹3,520,984.00 with an average order value of ₹3,520.98 and an average delivery time of 5.53 days.
  • Sales Trends: Sales showed a typical fluctuation throughout the day, with peak periods likely during lunch and evening hours.
  • Product Category Performance: The "Cake" category was the top revenue generator, followed by "Soft Toys" and "Raksha Bandhan" items. (Mention specific percentages or rupee values if possible).
  • Top Performing Products: Deserunt Box, Fuga Set, Voluptatem Box, Ad Box, and Error Gift were the top performing products.
  • Geographic Insights: Our strongest markets were Dibrugarh, Bilaspur Srikakulam, Imphal and Bhubaneswar
  • Impact of Occasions: Occasions like Anniversary, Raksha Bandhan and Holi contributed nearly 54% of the sales.
